Lightnin' Rod & The Thunderbolts play soulful blues with elements of rock there in the mix for good measure. 'After The Storm' is their latest release and demonstrates their musical prowess with Rod Wilson's gritty guitar work out front, accompanying his vocals and subtle and interesting arrangements forming an atttention grabbing musical backdrop. In fact, the songs stand out by virtue of the fact that the band have gone the extra mile to ensure that all the cuts sound anything other than generic or run of the mill.
The more you listen to the songs on this album the more you can hear subtle influencs form other musical genres creeping in, but in a way that adds to the overall sound, rather than muddying it. Jazz overtones here and there and some funky rythmns are blended in nicely to good effect.
'Bring You Back Home' with it's big sounding production, 'Writing on the Wall' with a delicate acoustic guitar motif running throughout and 'Rosalee' with it's warm dexterous blues rock guitar and 'late night' saxophone interjections collectively demonstrate the breadth on songwriting and arranging skills contained within this album.
