Grievous Angels have carved out a new hybrid sound for themselves, combining elements of folk, country, reggae, rock, funk and a bit of soul thrown in for good measure. Ebb and Flow is their latest collection of this interesting fusion of sounds and it all works well and is quite refreshing.
'Dusty Rhodes' leads you gently into the exotic musical world inhabited by the band, with it's funky folk lilt and some cool violin playing. 'Share the Air' continues the vibe with a gentle funk, some fine vocals and more groovy violin melodies. 'Sexy Registered Nurse' ups the funk factor with honking horns and a nice lazy sunny feel. 'All or Nothing Girls' is about as mainstream as the band get on this album and even then it is distinctly a Grievous Angels version of mainstream; soulful funk based with added extras! 'Zombification' rounds the album off nicely with a few changes of gear and grooves to ably demonstrate where this band can take their music and the listener too. The disparate musical genres on Ebb and Flow are held together by the sheer musicianship of the band members and their willingness to experiment and cross musical boundaries. The gentle grooves wash over you and the twists and turns that the arrangements to each song take keep the listener engaged at all times.Grievous Angels don't sound like anyone else, they are working across musical genres and bind them altogether to produce their own distinctive sound and are well worth checking out.
