ALL SONGS PERFORMED BY KING KANDY
The first thing to do when reviewing a soundtrack album is to find out more information about the actual film so your review can be more informed, but with the Acid Beach Party soundtrack there's a catch and the catch is, there ain't no film. What this actually is is a well executed set of retro surf/ garage tunes that would work perfectly as accompaniment to the film if it existed but stand on their own as a sound collage so that you can imagine the film in your head! All the music is a spot on recreation of 1960s surfing and garage band type fare and the snippets of supposed dialogue and sound effects in between songs just adds to the authenticity of the project.
'Acid Beach Party' with vocals by The Love Compartment tips it's hat to the likes of 'Surfin' Safari' perfectly with added tremolo fuzz tone guitar and authentic Jan and Dean type vocals. 'Surf My Way Now' Makes you think of a sixties instrumental like 'Pipeline' crossed with 'Telstar' and sounds all the better for it, wonderful stuff! 'Persehone's Theme' is a cool vibraphone led instrumental that recalls something from the musical past that you can't quite put a finger on. 'Nightcrawlin'' Has a really nice jazzy feel to it, with more of those vibes to accompany a tasty vibrato laced 'overdriven' organ workout and some 'incidental' dialogue towards the end of the track. 'Persephone' with vocals by Chad Vali has cool twangy guitar and muted Farfisa type keyboard sounds to underpin this ballad sung in a style reminiscent of Tom Jones without quite so much of the vocal histrionics and it works .
All of the music contained on this album works brilliantly because it has been put together with care and a love for the genre. The songs are not just parodies, but are well written and the feel and sound of each track is very authentic. This is well worth checking out as it is just very well executed and thoroughly entertaining. I just wonder what King Kandy will come up with next!
